Variety is the propeller of life

A man of many parts, TEMA India Ltd head, Haresh Sippy, shares his thoughts about work-life balance and giving back to the community

“An adventurer thrives on uncertainties, as the experience of coping with them enhances knowledge. You are better off being a jack of all trades than a master of one. Specialisation — the antithesis of variety — is conformity,” says Haresh Sippy, TEMA India Founder-MD. A master entrepreneur and technocrat, Sippy plays several roles with ease.

A pioneer in design technology and fabrication methodology in the field of process equipment manufacturing, Sippy began his career in the mid-1970s by manufacturing sampling bombs for Esso Refinery (now HPCL) and ONGC, a step that resulted in import substitution. But there is more to Sippy than meets the eye. The adventure seeker in him learnt to fly a plane. His creative avatar seeks expression in writing stories and sharing a lifetime’s experience through motivational quotes. “Life is all about striking a balance between work and play. Pursue both with passion,” Sippy says.

TEMA India Ltd. has its origins in a company he set up in 1975. The enterprise ventured into the manufacture of shell and tube heat exchangers and associated components. The company was incorporated in 1987 and has since grown to be one of the largest manufacturers of shell and tube heat exchangers in India, with three manufacturing bases close to Mumbai.

Sippy holds the Indian patent for shrink ring technology deployed in the manufacture of screw plug (breech lock type) heat exchangers used in high-pressure and high-temperature oil and gas applications. In 2016, he was invited to present a paper — An Improved Design of Threaded Closures for Screw Plug Heat Exchangers, at the 50th ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference held in Vancouver, Canada. He followed it up with another paper at the conference in Hawaii, US in 2017.

Imparting vocational training and employable skills to the underprivileged is his way of giving back to the community. A deep commitment to the development of indigenous technologies is his code for nation — building. “By 2020, we aim to be the world’s leading shell and tube manufacturer, with a presence in the entire range of static equipment,” Sippy says.
